4 Day Rwanda Gorilla Tracking Safari

Uganda and Rwanda are blessed with stunningly beautiful and varied landscapes, from the tropical splendour of the central Ugandan plateau to the volcanic Virunga mountains of Rwanda. Adding to this is a dramatic array of lakes and rivers together with one of the highest concentrations of rare primates in the world (gorillas, colobus monkeys and chimpanzees). Thus Uganda and Rwanda are the perfect foil to Kenya and Tanzania's big game attractions.

The gorillas inhabit the thick forests of the Virunga mountains which straddle the border between Uganda and Rwanda. Access to these mountains from Kigali is less than 2 hours drive. Gorilla tracking permits are in short supply and therfore booking well ahead is essential.

Day 1 | Kigali

Arrive Kigali Airport. Meet and transfer to the Serena Hotel for overnight BB.

The Kigali Serena Hotel is situated in Central Kigali, the ambassadorial and commercial heart of Rwanda and the city’s pre-eminent meeting place for diplomats and business people. The hotel is situated only 10 km from Kigali International Airport.

Day 2 | Ruhengeri - Kinigi

After breakfast take a leisurely drive North to Ruhengeri, lying at the base of the Virunga mountains. Enjoy a scenic drive to view the twin lakes Burera and Ruhondo, with lunch at Virunga Lodge. Continue to Kinigi for dinner and overnight at Mountain Gorillas Nest Lodge.

The Mountain Gorillas Nest Lodge is in a lovely rural setting and ideally situated close to the park headquarters for each morning’s registration process. Each public room overlooks green lawns and a semi-circle of 20 double rooms & 2 suites. The rooms all look outwards into the eucalyptus forest, pyrethrum farms and shambas (farms) beyond. The Lodge is well constructed, but utilitarian, with grass thatched roofs in traditional Rwandese style - not the "rustic luxury safari" style of East and Southern Africa. Nearby is a traditional Rwandan homestead for visitors to visit in their leisure time or after gorilla trekking.

Day 3 | Parc Volcans - Kigali

Early start to begin the gorilla tracking. The hiking may be long and somewhat strenuous at times, while patience is the order of the day. Upon sighting the gorillas, you will stay with them for one magical hour before returning to the park offices. Lunch and afternoon drive back to Kigali. Overnight Serena Hotel.

Day 4 | Depart

Transfer to airport for departure.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION – GORILLA PERMITS

There are currently four family groups for trekking in Rwanda, with a total of 30 permits per day being available. A fifth family has split off from these four main groups, and at the time of writing 6 more permits are available to trek here – however, this status could change any time.
